Will I benefit from the program if I take ADHD medicine?

I vaguely recall my program coordinator telling me not to take ADHD medication while on the program; however, it is possible that my memory does not serve me correctly. My question is, can I begin to take an ADHD medication while continuing my Dore exercisies?

bkramer there are those that have continued to take their ADHD medication while they have been on Dore and have been able to decrease it over time once Dore starts to really kick in.

Dore would prefer it if their clients were medication free but some have been so hyper without it they have to take it. How long have you been doing Dore and I take it you have been medication free up till now. What is happening at the moment that makes you feel you need to start taking it? Ellie XXX

I asked this question in the early days, and Dore's reply was the on-going assessments would be taken whilst on medication, so couldn't be measured against earlier results.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I have not used ADHD medication during the 10 months I've been on the program (although I was on Prozac for three of those months). The reason I want to go on ADHD medication is I have been doing psychotherapy concurrently with the program and my therapist believes an ADHD drug may help with executive function, which I define as the ability to start tasks. This is important for me now because I am looking for a new job and I will not accept one without being more able to start tasks.

How long have you been doing Dore bkramer3? I take it you must be a young adult I ask because Dore usually works quicker in adults than children, so you should see the benefits sooner. Executive function ability usually come at the end stages of Dore as everything finally comes together and your brain starts functioning as it should.

You certainly have enough on your plate with Dore, psychotherapy and looking for work, I wish you luck in all your future endeavours. Ellie XXX

Yes, I am 23. I've been on the program for 10 months. That sounds great, I've expected a lot from Dore but I've never expected it would help with executive function. Missellie, have you or your child gone through the program? If so, was your or your child's ability to start tasks noticeably different following the program? Thanks.

Hi Bkramer3 my daughter leila is nearly 3 years post Dore and her issues were global prior to Dore, she was 9 when she started the programme in 2004 and it took her 18 months to complete. She is a changed child from the one who commenced Dore who was 3 years behind her peers at school and was on a par 9 months after she finished.

Prior to Dore Leila had no ability to think for herself at all, we had to do it all for her. Now I can leave her to use her own initiative to do things around the house, care for herself and her animals wihout worrying that she may have forgotten something . Leila is now 13 and she organises her own school work and what she needs to take each morning and has done since she completed Dore. I have no worries with her now and you are 23 as you say so there is no reason why you should not be just as able as her, once you finish Dore.

Her brother Kieran is 7 and has been on the programme since January of this year his issues are not as severe as his sisters but he too struggles with learning at school. He has a way to go yet but he too is making good progress. Ellie XXX

Hi bkramer3, If you have read my previous posts you will be aware that my son has been on the programme whilst taking ADHD medication (concerta). We were advised at the outset of the programme that he should continue any prescribed mediction as Dore would not interfere with medical advice.

It is our aim to take him off the medication when we finish Dore and he has time off in the school holidays as well. He is 11 months in at present. If he didn't take the medication he would find school and doing exercises virtually impossible so he needs to keep it up at present.

I was advised taking the medication would not affect the way Dore works on the brain at all and we would still see benifits from the programme and we have. Mainly in reading but i feel we are at a point were medication can be decreased just waiting for next assessment.
