    Hi - I'm new - mum to Matthew (7)

Hi, just wanted to say hello.  Matthew is going to Kenilworth for his first assessment on Friday.

Mat has various issues at school, fine motor, gross motor skill problems - diagnosed with hypermobile joints.  hates writing, starting to like reading.  He is about average I believe for P3 but his concentration are poor. Mat has been referred to Ed Pschology and has a IEP being drafted.  could be a year before he is seen and his teacher would like some more one to one help for him.  ADHD has been mentioned by a few people, Beaver leader/swimming teacher, school are hinting at that as well.  He doesn't like change and I have to force him to take part in Beavers etc.  once he is out of the house he is happy enough.  Never stops taking, forgetful and when TV is on he is in another world.

I couldn't find anywhere in Scotland to get a private assessment and was concerned that they would end up giving him meds which I am against, he is not badly behaved.

Looking forward to the assessment but I don't know if they tell me what is wrong or whether it will just be the chart results ?  and not sure how I'm going to get him to do any exercises that the may put together for him.

Is there any questions I should ask at Dore.  this is all new to me.  I seem to find more pro's than con's for the programme so I have to give him the best possible chance in life, I'm lucky that I can afford to do it as there is nothing else available.  I think my doctor thought I was mad when I mentioned the programme - he couldn't see how it could help

thanks for listening, I only intended writing a few lines

Good luck with the assessment on Friday. I think you are starting Matthew at the right time, as the gap will only widen as he gets older. Having said that, Harry only started to notice he was "different" when he was older, so not sure how the exercises would have gone, had we started earlier. He was diagnosed with ADHD, but his teachers thought it was probably this without the "H".

Dore won't give Matthew a label, but you will have a chat with the Dr after the tests have been done and they will tell you if he has CDD (Cerebellum Developmental Delay) and whether he is suitable for the programme - by the sounds of it, I'm sure he will be.

Regarding the exercises, there are lots of hints on here for motivation. Basically, exercises come before TV etc., always worked for us.

Good luck and let us know how it goes on Friday.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

PS. There is a link to my blog (and others) on the right-hand side which will give you an insight of what to expect :)

    Hi

    Good luck for Friday.

We weren't told what was wrong with B but we did the online tests BEFORE we contacted them and before any appointment was made. Then I rang them up and spoke to them at length before committing to Dore. Matt seems to be very similar to B re fine and gross motor although he could not swim 'til a few months ago ( he is 10 soon) . He's never had an IEP or been on the register mainly due to the fact that his teachers thought they knew better than the specialistsHuh?   the  ' he'll catch up brigade'   that don't go in for teaching children with SEN and don't bother to find out more about their issues either. I also think that because he was and is non - behavioural they turned a blind eye.

I took control and refuse to let them interfere now, nothing gets in the way of the programme. He is progressing allthe time now, riding a bike, swimming, and little things like clicking his fingers and using a knife and fork properly as well as cutting with scissors )  if you approach the programme with the right attitude and stay focussed you will win through. The money we paid was from his 'future investment' fund........same thing really, just sooner that we thought.Big Smile

    Hi Tallyson

    Good luck tomorrow!

Dore does help with attention issues.  For years I attended nativities, plays and carol concerts at the school to see Daniel obiously somewhere else entirely - staring at the wall or at the ceiling and forgetting to sing.  He was in a play before Christmas and what a change!  He was either looking out into the audience or engaging with this fellow actors.  Also his handwriting has improved immensely.

If you're anything like the rest of us you're probably very nervous right now that he won't be found suitable for the programme!   I remember that feeling well;-)

HI, Im Tina, also new to the site.  Alex had his assessment on 13th Feb.  He is 13 now but was going on 11 before being diagnosed with Aspergers.  he has the hypermobility also.  Watch out for his foot arches.  Alex maintained fairly well with cranio-sacral osteopathy until aged 12 when he started growing.  Their feet start to grow so quickly then that his orthotics became less than useless.  Hopefully with the programme, your son won't ever get as bad as mine.  At least you are getting something done for him now.  You have all those extra years to work on him.  It gets difficult as they get older.  The exercises are fun for the most part, some can be a little painful on their calf muscles to start off with, but its not about being in pain, its about building up the level of exercise until they are easier.  its not a competition to see how fast they can get them done and they only take about 5 min morning and evening.  I think its fantastic that you can do this.  Tina.

    Hi.

I have son which is 12 years old, and come all the way from Norway to go to Kenilworth. Like your son, my son also have challenges in several areas. And as you experienced health personell in Norway also said I shouldn't go. And like you I am also against giving medication when I don't feel we need it, as my son isn't bad behaved.

I can't express how great I think it is that there is people who dare to think outside the box and do the work they do at Dore.

When I told my son about Dore he pressured me to get him an apointment, so we had our first consultation the 17th of February. And what they said about the cerebellum made sense to in relation to the challenges my son has.

I hope you meeting at Dore went well. And which your son and you good luck on the program.

    Ria from snowy Oslo ;-)

    Hi Ria,

I am Tina for Ireland.  My son is now on the programme since 14th February and I am noticing some changes.  Again he is very well behaved, much too well behaved.  For the first time ever the teacher sent him outside the door today for being rude to him in class!  I think this is a good thing because obviously changes are happening.  Alex would never have done this before, just stared dreamily into space!  I can see him getting stronger and making new friends.  Yesterday he commpleted at 10Km walk, which he could not have done before either.  He is also doing very well at school now and his attitude towards school seems to be improving (he hates it).  Also his drawing has greatly improved and I am hoping his handwriting will improve too.  So far everything has been positive.  How is your son?  I would love to hear.  Tina.
