Are we coming to the end

    Hi

I think my son is coming to end of the Dore programme after 18 months. As we are doing it on line without assestments, I would be interested to know how other people realised that their children were reaching the end and anything in particular to look out for.

    Any comments would be welcome.

    Thanks

    Hi

We were on the high level exercises for a long time, I'd give them a ring because when we went the computer 'said' we should finish too.

We went to an assessment where they thought she should finish and the computer agreed :)

Re: Are we coming to the end

We e-mailed dore asking when how we  would know when our son was ready for wind down,so was told after looking at how many exercises we have done (nov2007) he could go on wind down.He is very happy,as being pre my dore he liked the regular assesments, he missed them, we were struggling to get him to do them.Hope it is the right time for him finishing without personal assesment, its not possible for us to travel to england  for one at this time.  I was curious how my dore decides people they are ready for winddown.Hope this makes sense not very good at explaining what i mean.Embarrassed

I 'think' it has a lot to do with how similar children have marked thier responses and finished - could be wrong

Re: Are we coming to the end

     Hi

We're in Australia and commenced Dore in January 08. My son has hyperativity problems along with poor concentration and attention span. We are still marking most exercises hard and would really like to someone just to raise our hopes a little. It's such a drain to get him to do the exercises every day. There has been some improvement but can someone tell me if the exercises will eventually become easy after such a long time. As you can imagine we've had no support over here whatsoever and I feel a little lost at times! I don't want to throw it away after all this time (and $5000 poorer) .Unfortunately we can't do a lot of mentals until he gets marked easy! I don't want to medicate him as he's not aggressive - he just can't sit still and concentrate! At the moment his teacher is concerned because his learning and behaviour is worse than last year. We just keep on exercising and hoping!

Can anyone raise my hopes with their experiences?

    Hi Jo

We were on the dore for about 16 months, even at the end we didn't mark every exercise easy or do mentals with each exercise.  Do you have my dore online and can you email dore to ask how you are doing?

Thankyou, EmeraldJan. We are still on Mydore - never received MyDore 2 In Australia. That's my assumption anyway? We definately didn't . By what I've read it would have been a lot more motivating for him!

I've tried emailing the MyDore feedback in the past and had no response? As I said I feel quite lost and alone. I want him to keep improving but it would great if someone could just tell us we are on the right track. I input his exercises daily and download a new book when available. Other than that I don't know what else to do? Do you know of a different email address I could try?

    Thanks for your support!

hope it helps, I did feel that we were coming to the end with G, we were getting the same exercises all the time, they didn't get harder and she had about 4 books of those.

As I said she didn't get most exercises easy but then again neither would I!

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Joanne Harry has similar difficulties to your son. We finished last December after being on the programme for roughly 2 years. Even at the end, we were marking the exercises hard and was surprised when they told us we could finish. We opted to carry on for a further 6 weeks and then wound down. Harry still has poor concentration issues, but his confidence is soaring, he has lots of friends, and is now beginning to learn and retain information. The best thing to come out of this is Harry's high level of self-esteem now and his social confidence. Thank you Dore!

    Hi Bugalug

Well this is my second attempt because I just lost my first attempt!  GRRRRR!!!

Hi Bugalug      Thanks so much for your encouragement. Harry does have similar problems to Liam - does he have problems with auditory processing, reading and comprehension? Liam is still finding the balance exercises very hard on one leg (esp eyes closed). I'm sure the two of them would get along famously!!  Liam has improved socially even though he still has more room for improvement. He can actually verbalise with friends now whereas before it was a real struggle. He's pretty full-on physically so he can forget about being gentle sometimes - good at sport! He's not aggressive just takes sport seriously. Maybe Harry would like to send Liam some encouragement all the way to Australia.

I've read before that Harry still has problems with concentration so I kind of expect that to stay - I'm just hoping his academic side will keep improving! He is remembering things more than he used to which is great but there is still room for improvement. I'm hoping that his reading will eventually take off. I think it will take us the full 2 years to complete.  Exercises are a nightmare every day. He doesn't try as hard as I think he can but maybe my expectations are too high? We miss one session every Friday night when he has a Representative Basketball Game as I find it makes his concentration worse. Other than that it's the wonderful people on Dore Talk that keep us all sane and put us back on track when things start to go backwards.

Thanks EmeraldJan for your support also - have emailed as per your instruction but I'm not that confident about receiving a reply. I'll let you know how I go!

Re: Are we coming to the end

Hi Joanne - yes, Harry does have difficulty with auditory processing and particularly comprehension. I have a private tutor now who specialises in dyslexia and she's working wonders. It isn't cheap, but I feel she's making a lot of progress with Harry and he likes her, which is good. His reading is great, although he is still reluctant to pick up a book, but I'm finding he is asking the spellings of words he sees in the newspaper for example. My daughter also hated reading until she discovered the Twilight series of books, and now she doesn't put them down, so I'm hoping as Harry matures, he will find something that "grabs" him. Harry also is able to keep up with his friends now instead of existing in his own little bubble, which is wonderful. He even helps his mates with their schoolwork when they get stuck! We never got the balance exercises easy, even at the end! :) BTW, Harry says "keep at it Liam - it's well worth it at the end!"

Re: Are we coming to the end

Thanks Bugalug for the encoragement - I got Liam to read your post and I think he felt a little important! Anyway, I've come to accept that this is where we are at present. He's struggling immensely with discipline at present.  He won't be told and he's forever refusing to do things any way but his way! I think it's going to be one fight to the end with his exercises. He's the same in sport. He plays representative basketball and he won't listen to the coaches instructions. Instead of staying in his postion he runs to the ball. He's tall so he is meant to stay put as a rebounder. Maybe his hyperactivity is just too controlling?  It's just getting through to him that's the problem. I wander whether the exercises are causing some of these issues? Here's hoping for his sake!!!!  I have read recently some old posts that talked of the worst behaviour coming out towards the end of the program. Maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel? I wish everyone involved with him would understand this also! Here's hoping one day that Liam is as successful as Harry was on the program!

    Cheers, Jo
